ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Cultural Criminology is a theoretical, methodological and interventionist approach to the study of crime and deviance, which places crime and its control in the context of culture; that is, it regards crime and crime control agencies and institutions as cultural products - as creative constructions. Cultural criminologists tirelessly focus on the continuous generation of meaning around interaction: rules created, rules broken, and a constant interaction of moral entrepreneurship, political innovation, and transgression.

Cultural Criminology faces issues such as the production of crime, law and society; social control, social justice and solidarity; criminalization processes; analysis of criminal conflict management mechanisms and related public policies; mediated representation of crime; cultural criminalization; protest and politics of urban space; subcultural practices of resistance; green cultural criminology and denunciation of environmental predation; the nexus between security, policing and social control, aiming at containing punitive power and consolidating social justice. With it, it is possible to understand a contemporary world in which crime and the image of crime spiral together; where the emotions of crime are built from the intensity of immediate experience, but also from the ceaseless flow of crime and criminal television films; where insecurity and displacement define both personal life and the contours of social problems; where the criminal predations of global capitalism and the images and information circulating in the digital media also deserves a criminological look.

In fact, Criminology is now a well-established ― if heterogeneous and contentious ― field of study.. The work of cultural criminologists supports several international journals, regional organizations and global conferences. It is within this context that Salah H. Khaled Jr, Álvaro Oxley da Rocha, Jeff Ferrell and Keith Hayward conceived the Brazilian Institute of Cultural Criminology. Founded in April 2019, the Institute has the following purposes:

I. To disseminate Cultural Criminology, its authors and main works in Brazil, as well as to develop the Brazilian Cultural Criminology;

II. To foster the development of teaching, research and studies related to Cultural Criminology and other areas of knowledge with which it can dialogue through the promotion of courses, debates, seminars, meetings, or conferences that have as central axis the perspectives of Cultural Criminology;

III. To maintain study groups and debates committed to analyze the Brazilian criminal issue through the perspective of Cultural Criminology and other areas that can dialogue with it;

IV. To qualify the public debate on crime and crime control based on the insights of Cultural Criminology, which includes the circulation of ideas within the Legislative, the mainstream media and the different agencies that integrate the penal system;

V. To contribute, based on the perspectives and methods of Cultural Criminology, to the production and dissemination of theoretical and empirical knowledge on the criminal matter, in a way that is committed to the progressive realization of social justice;

VI. To promote the scientific debate resulting from the research and activities developed within the scope of the Institute through the publication of books, newsletters and magazines that address topics of interest to Cultural Criminology and other areas that can dialogue with it;

VII. Establish contacts and partnerships with other related Institutions, whose purpose is teaching, studying and / or researching matters related to Cultural Criminology and the criminal sciences.

SPOTLIGHT

Exploring cultural criminology brings together for the first time two of the biggest names in cultural criminology, Jeff Ferrell and Keith Hayward, with two Brazilian cultural criminologists, Salah H. Khaled Jr. and Álvaro Oxley da Rocha.The book inaugurates the collection Crime, Culture, Resistance and discusses key issues such as visual criminology and mediated representation of crime, cultural criminalization, urban space politics and protest, subculture practices, crime and music, ethnography, anti-positivist criminology, and the nexus between security, policing and social control.

Exploring cultural criminology, it is possible to understand a contemporary world in which crime and the image of crime spiral together; where the emotions of crime are built from the intensity of immediate experience, but also from the ceaseless flow of crime and criminal television films; where insecurity and displacement define both personal life and the contours of social problems; where the criminal predations of global capitalism, widespread violence in refugee and migrant populations, the dangers of terrorism and the dangers of responding to it, images and information circulating in digital media also deserve a criminological look.

Come explore with us: a new era for cultural criminology in Brazil begins here.

Jeff Ferrell, Keith Hayward, Salah H. Khaled Jr. e Álvaro Oxley da Rocha.
